Who is the
comedian/writer/actor that The Los Angeles Times calls "…quite likely the
funniest entertainer you've never heard of… yet"? Paul Murphy spent almost eleven years as an Assistant District Attorney, supervising several of Massachusetts’s busiest courthouses, before building a reputation as a noted criminal-defense trial attorney. The unexpected twist to this story is that, for nine of those years, under the pseudonym of Paul D’Angelo, Paul was simultaneously becoming one of the nation’s top standup comedians. While maintaining a full-time legal career, Paul rose from open-miker to headliner in less than six months and was selected to host his own weekly show at Boston’s two premier comedy clubs at the time, Nick’s Comedy Stop and the Comedy Connection, for six and two years respectively. In 1989 Paul had the honor of being chosen as a national finalist representing Boston in the Johnny Walker Comedy Search and was named "Boston’s Best Comedian" in 1994 and 1995 by Boston Magazine… no insignificant feat in a city which has produced enormously successful comedy stars such as Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Steven Wright, Dane Cook, John Pinette, Billy Burr, Louis C.K. and Denis Leary. In 1997, Paul was honored to be invited as a feature performer at the Montreal ‘Just for Laughs’ International Comedy Festival. Paul was also a national finalist in the 1999 San Francisco International Comedy Competition; he was a national finalist representing Boston in the 'Laughs Across America' comedy search sponsored by the Las Vegas Comedy Festival; and he was also a national finalist, chosen from among thousands of contestants across the country, in the 2005 Sierra Mist / Improv 'Next Great Comic Search'. In addition, Paul is the writer/director/co-star of the original sitcom pilot 'A Fine Mess' which was featured at the prestigious New York International Independent Film Festival in 2002. Paul’s has entertained hundreds of prominent corporate clients throughout the nation including Ford Motor Co., MITA Corp., Sony Music Corp., Hasbro / Milton-Bradley Corp., Hewlett-Packard Corp., Fidelity Investments, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Bike Athletic Corp., Nike-Bauer International and the Burger King Corporation. As evidence of his adaptability, Paul has been selected to open up for over sixty internationally known recording artists as diversified as rhythm and blues greats Ray Charles, the Four Tops, the Temptations and Patti LaBelle; rock and roll legends Huey Lewis and the News, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Beach Boys, Chicago, the Righteous Bros., Aretha Franklin and Hall & Oates; country-western stars Lyle Lovett, Tanya Tucker and the Oakridge Boys; comedians George Carlin, Joan Rivers and Dennis Miller; and mature artists such as Tony Bennett, Englebert Humperdinck and Bobby Vinton, in various theater venues accommodating audiences of up to 5000+ people. Paul has headlined A-List comedy clubs around the country for 25 years and he has performed at many other famed entertainment venues ranging from the legendary Friar’s Club and the Waldorf Astoria’s main ballroom in New York City, to the main showroom at Harrah’s Casino and Caesar’s Palace. In addition, Paul has performed at many other casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City; he has appeared on Oceania, Regent and Norwegian Cruise Lines; and has entertained at many colleges including Harvard University, Lehigh University, UNH, Boston University, Boston College and U. Massachusetts. While living in Los Angeles, Paul appeared regularly at the Hollywood Improvisation and Laugh Factory and performed as a headliner at the Ice House and the Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, CA, arguably the country’s most discriminating non-showcase stand-up comedy venue that regularly features performers such as Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Gary Shandling, Ray Romano, Howie Mandel and Arsenio Hall. Combining an energetic, charismatic stage presence and spontaneous improvisational talent with an endless array of intelligent humor delivered in an animated style that grabs and holds the attention of crowds everywhere he performs, Paul’s constantly evolving and diverse selection of original material "takes normal everyday experiences and makes them sound absolutely hilarious." Critics further write that "(Paul D’Angelo) is an energetic performer who gives a peak performance at every show." "His quick comedic mind," "unique observations" and "down to earth, stop-and-think humor" "keeps the crowd in hysterics." Although Paul is known to comedy devotees as a prolific creator of intelligent, introspective and reflective humor that everyone can relate to, there are still numerous comedy routines, funny stories and anecdotes that Paul rarely gets an opportunity to share with his live audiences, so he has written a hilarious collection of those eclectic musings in a new book entitled Stories I Tell: A Comic’s Random Attempts to Make Some Sense Out of Nonsense. Paul recently co-starred in Showtime’s popular stand-up comedy movie, The Godfathers of Comedy, and has also released two DVDs and three critically acclaimed comedy CDs that are played regularly on national radio. 9-4-14 |
